Today's Issue: Forgiving Thanks to the ADA

Tis the season to give thanks. It is the time of year when the American Diabetes Association sends out nickels and address labels to people who have supported the ADA in the past. As much as the address labels come in handy - C peptide would have been far more useful in enhancing the quality of life with Type 1 diabetes. Then again, maybe Allie was just ringing the wrong bells when she called and asked the ADA to encourage Big Pharmaceutical companies to make C-peptide available to treat Type 1 diabetes complications. In response to the nickel, Allie is giving back in spite of the ADA's former reluctance to serve her needs as a person living with diabetes. Find out what flurry of events caused the revelation and the outcome.

Are they catching you at a moment of weakness? Sorry, but the excuse they gave you was lame, and while the person answering the phone couldn't help it, it does not merit a donation!

Why are you feeling guilty Allie and why are you contributing $$ to the ADA for "the things that they don't do?"
The ADA does not represent the interests of people with T1DM!!
They (ADA) represent their own interests and those with IRD(aka Type 2 Diabetes).
The ADA in their PR state that they are a representative body to those with Diabetes. If that is the case, why did they not promote the research and media attention for C-peptide?
If you want to contribute money to a worthy cause, then send me the check. I support C-peptide research and have made it known on a continual basis how important this peptide is in the treatment and possible prevention of Complications associated with Type 1 Diabetes.
If you need my address as to where to send the check, I will be happy to give it to you.

    Allie—

I wish you had taken your check and enjoyed a nice evening out with a friend rather than contributing it to a charity organization that doesn’t care what happens to you or me. The ADA and the JDRF are nothing more than corporate parasites, relying on the heartfelt compassion and willingness of the diabetes family to perpetuate their goal of filling corporate coffers.

Whether they use 5%, 10% or whatever amount of contributions to fund basic research for a cure, the recipient in all likelihood will squander those funds. University researchers, private corporate researchers, think-tank researchers and other quasi-corporate/medical research groups—all accept funding from other charitable agencies, government agencies and most importantly, pharmaceutical/medical technology groups. The majority of researchers’ career goals, notoriety and ultimate position within their group is more reflective of how much money they bring in than the results they actually obtain. There may be a few exceptions to this plague on every disease, but the result is these “exceptions’ end up disillusioned and depressed by failure of everyone around them to see the light.

I think we all ought to look seriously at the possibility (each in our own disease-of-interest) of filing an injunction against charities and corporations that have foisted unethical products/treatments on vulnerable patients, and misused monies given in good faith. It is my understanding that most of the people we’re talking about act like the MOB, and the reality is, the MOB has been hampered by RICO actions more than any other measure. It should not be hard to prove that money taken from a generous benefactor for one reason, and spent/invested for a totally different reason should fall under RICO auspices. We should also consider that things like artificial sweeteners, rDNA insulins, totally suspect “dietary recommendations”, specious management guidelines based on ‘tight control’ and outright lies concerning complications benefit organizational and corporate goals rather than individuals.

Soliciting money for “cure research” or “improved treatments” and giving us back toxic “artificial sweeteners” and prettier/faster/smaller meters as our ‘return on investment’ is not only disingenuous—it is, or should be criminal behavior, if False Claims prosecution were extended to charitable endeavors.

I commend your philanthropic spirit, but feel in the case of ADA contributions, you are merely casting pearls before swine.
